The full moon was shining bright that night. It just started to snow as I turned to my co-worker and said, “I’ll be right back… I have to take this.”
I flipped open my phone (yup, flip phone), hit call answer and said, “Hey You! How’s it going?”
“Not bad… you called?” she asked.
“I did,” I answered. “I wanted to talk to you about something…”
Rewind to the early summer of that year:
I decided that the 2 years we spent together, should come to a close. We were arguing a lot and it seemed like we were never the same ever since the Pepto Bismol Pink evening.
Not to mention, my friends didn’t like her… So I had to break up with her, right? Such a typical mid-20’s guy!
After I called it off, we still hung out quite a bit. Anytime I came into town after being away for work, we would spend a couple afternoon’s together or maybe go out for dinner. We never really stopped hanging out.
Fast forward back to that evening underneath the full moon:
“So I’ve been thinking…” I started.
“What have you been thinking?”
“Well, I’ve been thinking that I may have made a mistake. You and I both know that we are made for one another. I was stupid… I think we should get back together.”
I thought this would be nothing more than a formality and she’d be moving back in next week.
“This is weird… this silence seems to be going on for a little longer than I had anticipated,” I thought to myself.
“Scott…”
“Yes, honey?”
“I’ve met someone else.”
Enter image of mushroom cloud here!
“What?!?!”
“I’ve met someone and I really like him.”
My knees felt weak.
“Is it serious?” I already knew the answer by the tone in her voice.
“Yes!”
I thought I was going to puke.
“So… so…. so… we’re…. done then?” I could feel the blood rushing out of my face.
“Yes Scott. You decided that months ago.”
For the next few days, I couldn’t sleep, I couldn’t eat. Eventually I was sent home from work because I could barely function. I spent hours pacing back and forth in the apartment that we used to share, crying uncontrollably.
I kept asking myself why she would do such a thing. I kept thinking that she would come back, that she would call at any moment and tell me she still wanted to be a part of my life… but that phone call never came.
I locked myself up and isolated myself from the outside world. I didn’t want to talk to anyone. The world was torturing me, so I would disconnect myself from that pain but the relief never came.
I ended up losing just under 15 lbs in less than a week. I couldn’t eat, I couldn’t sleep…
Once again, I asked myself, “How the hell did I get here?”
To be continued….
