I stood up, walked to the front of the kitchen and raised my voice, “Excuse me! Could I have everyone’s attention? I just wanted to take a couple minutes to explain what you were all a part of here today.”
In November, my brother and I went to San Diego and spent the weekend with my Mom, where we ran the Tough Mudder, which we dedicated to her – The Brudder Mudder. When we arrived in San Diego and met up with my Mom, one of the first things she said to me was, “I have to talk to you. I have a request.”
The next day, we were sitting in my aunt’s front yard when I turned to my Mom and asked her, “What is it that you wanted to talk about?”
“I want you to do something for me,” she responded. “The trip to The Ronald McDonald House left an impression on me. I want you, your brother and your sisters to start a family tradition for me.”
She went on to describe her vision for this tradition. It would include volunteering our time as a family, at The House, preparing a meal for the families who were living there. It would also include donating gifts, one for each of the grandchildren in our family, to the Magic Room at The Ronald McDonald House.
“Would you be able to do that for me?” she asked.
“Absolutely. But can we take it one step further?”
“What did you have in mind?” she questioned me.
“Well, you recognized how special this place is and you came up with this idea to continue the experience for years to come. Why don’t we share this experience with some of those people who we hold dearest?”
As a smile formed across her face, “I love it! Let’s do that!”
Unfortunately, Mom was not feeling well and couldn’t make it today. She has, however, asked that I share her most sincere thanks to all of you for being here for the first of this new and very special family tradition. Each and every one of you are here today because you are special to our family. Our most sincerest thanks and gratitude to you all.
