Happy Birthday Mom

by Scott on August 17, 2014

Tomorrow (August 18) is Mom’s Birthday. It’s been 4 months since she passed and I still have days where I feel weak when I think about her.

Today, the reason for my feeling of weakness is fueled by a sense of regret. My Mom and I were not close for a significant period during my adult life. I intentionally missed a number of her Birthdays because I allowed our differences to drive a wedge between us.

I woke up to this quote today:

3 things you can’t recover in life:

The word after it’s said,

the moment after it’s missed,

and the time after it’s gone.

I know that I can’t change the past, but I can focus on what I’m doing right now so that I don’t replay the same mistake I made with my Mom. I will spend time with the people who care about me and those who I care about most. I will not allow those petty differences get in the way of what matters most. I will avoid wanting to recover a word that I have said, I’ll make the most of every moment and I’ll make the most of all the time I have.

I am learning so many lessons from my Mom, even after she has left us.

Happy Birthday Mom! I’ll even have a piece of cake for you. :)
