Alas, my temporary retirement has come to an end. It’s been an incredible 3 and a half months but a great opportunity was placed in front of me and so I will be returning to the wonderful world of employment.

It’s time to get back to work, but this time, with a strategy in place instead of “just collecting a paycheque.”

Making it Official Before it’s Official

I’m going to make it official right here, right now:

In April of 2016, I will be walking away from the industry I currently work in, to focus 100% of my time on my business. Not that I’m officially giving my notice yet (so please don’t tell my new boss), but I will be working on my business over the next 7-8 months so that I can leave my JOB and focus all my time on what I’m most passionate about and living My Ideal Day, each and every day!

I’m putting this out there to have all of you, hold me accountable. Nothing like a bunch of other people holding your feet to the fire to keep you motivated and working hard.

So What’s Next Then?

As I mentioned in my recent blog post, My 36 for 36: Honourable Mentions where I shared some items that didn’t make my formal 36 for 36 Final List, but I still plan on accomplishing over the course of the next year, Starting an Online Business was one of those items.

Although I’m it’s a bit premature to get too far into the details of what the Online Business is going to look like exactly (I’m still working on a lot of the details), I’ll share with you a few of the things that you can expect to see from me over the coming months.

Positivity Revolution

I launched an athletic wear clothing line last year and, what I very quickly learned, was that I had no idea what I was doing. All I knew was that I wanted to do something that would pay tribute to my Mom after her passing, and that would leave a positive impact on people’s lives.

From the beginning it didn’t feel quite “right” but while I was on my West Coast Road Trip, I was able to really reconnect with my creative side. Once the creativity began flowing, I realized what I truly want Positivity Revolution to look like.

In the next couple months, you will begin to see how this business will take shape – much different than the original idea and completely unique to anything that exists – at least that I know of.

Blue Collar Online Entrepreneur

When I left for my West Coast Road Trip, I knew I was about to embark on a journey. My plan was to write in a journal everyday, so that I could remember and recall all the memories from the trip once I returned home. I was not very successful at this activity! Good thing I captured as many memories as I could with my camera!

I’m about to embark on another journey. I’ve never built a successful online business before but I have taken a lot of courses on “How to start an online business.” I’ve listened to hours and hours of podcasts and spent countless evenings reading blog posts. It’s time to start applying all the knowledge that I’ve accumulated.

Blue Collar Online Entrepreneur will act as a journal as I work through starting my online business. I’ll be sharing all the ups, downs and even the MAJOR MISTAKES. I want this to serve 2 purposes:

A journal that I can look back on to see how far I’ve come and help me make smarter decisions in the future based on past results.

A guide for any other people out there who have walked a similar path as me and are looking to make a similar shift in their life.

If you’re interested, I’ve created a Blue Collar Online Entrepreneur Group on Facebook. I’ll be sharing all the successes, failures, strategies and insights that I gain along the way. If you want to join the Group and follow along or make recommendations, just CLICK HERE and send me request to join.

There you have it! At a very high level, this is what’s next for me. Lots of things happening in the coming months, so stay tuned!

YAAAAAAAAAWWWWWN! I my eyes begin to open while I stretch my arms and legs away from one another! Jaxie is already staring at me with his nub (tail – he’s a boxer) wagging back and forth. He’s already excited because he knows that he is about to go out for his morning walk.

I take Jax out, feed him and then I grab a glass of water and sit down at the computer. This is one of my favourite parts of the day. This is when I set the intention to acquire inspiration, not just inspiration for me, but inspiration that means something to me and that I can share with the world. I check Facebook, Twitter and my email. Whatever seems to speak to me at that moment, I share out with my network with the intention that it will reach whoever needs to see it.

I take a warm, unrushed shower which usually generates a couple ideas for blog posts or business ideas. I write the ideas down as soon as I get out of the shower. I make myself a smoothie, grab my gym shoes and head out to the gym.

I spend about 90 minutes at the gym working as hard as I can. I listen to a playlist that really pumps me up but during my cool down period (10 minutes of biking or walking), I listen to my favourite podcast.

I head home to grab lunch which is a wrap of some sort. I sit down at the computer and begin to write the latest blog post. It’s something that just pours out from somewhere inside me. My intention is that it reaches whoever needs to see it.

I walk over and grab Jaxie’s leash and we go on our daily adventure. We go and explore the beautiful river valley for 60-90 minutes, taking breaks along the way to just simply enjoy the sights and sounds. The lush green of the trees and grass, the sound of the river water trickling through the rocks – it’s all so wonderful and relaxing.

We get home and Jaxie collapses in the living room, panting with satisfaction.

I sit down at the computer, check email and respond to any urgent emails. I engage with my community on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram talking about what’s happening, what’s upcoming and just being me!

It’s late afternoon now. I begin to think more strategic and what I need to work on to have things prepared for what’s upcoming. Make phone calls, work on product development or perform research.

I eat dinner at about 6:00pm and I watch a movie on Netflix.

If I don’t go meet a friend for coffee or go to my family’s house for supper, I watch videos or read blog posts on subjects that I am trying to learn more about.

The sun is setting, I take a moment to take in the smells, admire the color as it stretches across the sky and let myself wind down.

What does your ideal day look like?

Ok, let’s take a moment and recap. I decided that “I Don’t Want to Do This Forever” which caused me to quit my six-figure a year job in April (2015) and led me to ask, “What Do I Do Next?”

Ok, so you may be wondering, what have I done since quitting my job. Well here you go!

Buck-A-Burpee

For the second straight year, myself and my sister-from-another-mister, Melsha Shea spent 35 days doing burpees and raising money for Ronald McDonald House Charities Northern Alberta. The basic concept is that I complete an insane amount of burpees (7,525) over the course of 35 days and ask people to sponsor my insanity by donating $1 per burpee.

Over the course of 13 months, and 2 rounds of Buck-A-Burpee, with the help of so many supporters, Melsha and I were able to raise almost $35,000 for RMHCNA!

Learn about The Birth of Buck A Burpee.

West Coast Road Trip

I finished up with Buck-A-Burpee on May 9 and on May 12, I set out on a road trip that drove through BC, Washington, Oregon, California, Arizona, Nevada, Utah, Idaho, Montana and back through Alberta.

I brought Jax along with me and we staying in hotels, campgrounds and even stayed in a tiny cabin one night. I went to a couple baseball games, saw Game 1 of the NBA Western Conference Finals and visited a plethora of dog parks along the way.

The best part of the trip, was when we arrived in San Diego and spent Memorial Day weekend with my Aunt and Uncle.

Since My Last Moments with Mom, I really wanted to focus on my relationships with family, especially the family south of the border. Since I wasn’t working and my calendar was wide open, this was the perfect time for me to go spend some time with them in one of the most beautiful cities I’ve ever seen!

36 for 36

Originally, I wasn’t going to do 36 for 36. I had decided that I just wanted to let the year come to me this year instead of planning it all out like I did with my 35 for 35.

But then, a funny thing happened. While on my West Coast Road Trip, I spent a lot of time with just me and my thoughts, and I decided that I missed having those clear goals that I was pointed towards.

So, when I arrived home, I started building my 36 for 36 list. The best part about it, is that a few others decided they wanted to build their own lists too. We started a Facebook Group to support one another and share ideas as we all work through our own lists in an effort to make this “the best year yet.”

If you’re interested in joining our group, send us a request to join the Facebook Group by clicking here!

Florida

My friend and I flew to Florida to watch the NHL Entry Draft in Sunrise, FL at the end of June. I had never been to Florida before, so we made the most of our time there.

We went to a Marlins game and watched it from a nightclub that has been built into left field (highly recommended). We swam in the ridiculously warm Miami Beach water. We watch the sunset while sitting on Sunset Pier and then celebrated my friend’s 36 birthday on Duvall Street in Key West and we finished off the trip by relaxing in Key Largo!

I now understand why all the Snowbirds head to Florida!

My Why

I think that the greatest thing that I’ve done during this time since my last day of work, is reconnect to what’s really and truly important to me. The things that make my heart feel warm. The things that make me feel alive.

What I love about the last 3 months are:

The ability to pick up and go where I want when I want to go.

Taking Jax on an hour long adventure in the river valley, everyday.

Spending time with my family whenever I want.

Sitting down at the computer and writing when I feel inspired to do so, like I am doing at this very moment.

There are more things that compose My Why and I’m sure it will be the topic of future posts.

If I think back to “I Don’t Want to Do This Forever” and “What Do I Do Next?” I think that I got lost along the way because I didn’t know My Why. I didn’t know why I was doing what I was doing. I hadn’t made a connection to a purpose that meant something to me!

The greatest thing that I have done in the last 3 months since I left my job, is that I have discovered “My Why!!”

I hope I’m not giving the impression that I’ve been living a nightmare, the last several years haven’t been all bad. In fact, even though I struggled through my “I Don’t Want to Do This Forever” days, I’ve been given a number of incredible gifts along the way as well. Below are a few of The Gifts That I Got Through the Struggle.

Life-Long Friendships

Some of my closest friends who I trust the most, are people who I met at work. When you spend that much time with people, it tends to result in one of two ways. You either end up driving each other crazy and you can’t wait to get away from them. Or, you make a connection that will last for the rest of your life. I’m fortunate enough to say that I came away with more life long friends than those who made me crazy and even a few who qualify as both!

See and Visit Some Incredible Places

At the age of 27, I could probably count on one hand how many times I had been on a plane. Since then, I’ve been flown with most commercial airlines to major sporting events all over North America (including one of my all-time bucket list items and item from My 35 for 35 list: Fenway Park in Boston), explored the Northwest Territories in a helicopter and even traveled to mountains in central Mexico in a private jet.

More importantly, because of the living I’ve been provided the opportunity to make, I’ve been able to go to see a couple of my closest friends get married on beautiful beaches that I would not have been able to afford otherwise.

Learning Experiences and Growth Opportunities That I Can Share with Others

Even when times were toughest, I never gave up. Instead I looked at each of those experiences as opportunities to learn and grow.

It seemed with each painful experience, I walked away with a new habit, strategy or perspective to ensure that I would never be put into that same position again.

Beyond the Blue Collar

A few years ago, when I first started to recognize what I was doing, I began to look closer at these habits, strategies and perspectives. I started a blog and began writing about everything I was doing on a day to day basis.

Last year, I took all of the blog posts and bundled them together to create my first book called, “Beyond the Blue Collar.” The purpose of this book is to provide the reader with some simple strategies that they can implement starting today, which will help them become more valuable in the workplace. I like to say that if you follow the suggestions in the book, you will drastically reduce the likelihood of being laid off by increasing the value you bring to the team.

On a side note, I’ve recently created a group together to read, review and provide feedback on the book. I’m going to take the feedback and update the book to provide greater value to my readers. If you’re interested in participating in this group, click here and send me a message on my Facebook Page.

Going Further Beyond the Blue Collar

After accepting the promotion that took me to the corporate head office and eventually resulted in a role in senior management, I recognized other elements that I needed to focus on to keep learning, growing and providing value in my new role. In my previous roles, I could easily succeed by keeping things simple and sticking with the strategies outlined in “Beyond the Blue Collar.” However, if you want to climb the corporate ladder, or skip the ladder all together and just take the elevator, there are some other tips, strategies and shifts in perspective that will need to take place. Especially if you plan on staying there once you do arrive.

Going Further Beyond the Blue Collar is a series of blog posts that I will be releasing over the next couple of months. If you’re interested in receiving these posts directly to your inbox, click here!

Breaking Free of the Blue Collar

This is where I am right now. This is my answer to What Do I Do Next?

In 6 months or 12 months, it will be interesting to come back to this post and update this section. The one thing I can tell you is that Breaking Free of the Blue Collar will be more about you than it will be about me. I can promise you that!

Now that I’ve decided that I don’t want to do this forever, what do I do next?

This was the thought that swirled around in my head years ago when I first made my decision. Unfortunately, I got caught up along the way.

What I did do next was go and take some additional training, so that I could expand my horizons into another career. I would work away from home for 21 days straight, come home for my week off and take as many courses as I could. Eventually, I completed my certification and got a job as a Safety Supervisor with a small company in the Oil & Gas Industry.

I was reinvigorated! I was doing something fresh and new and I really felt like I was making a difference. I learned a bunch in the first year and a half of my new profession and unknowingly, I was changing the way that I conducted myself day and day out.

After 18 months with that company, I made a quick pit stop with another company for 3 months and then I was contacted by the company I worked for when I decided to take my safety training.

“Hey Scott, we have a job and we need some safety people, are you interested in coming on?” Four weeks later I was headed up to wonderful Fort McMurray.

Over the next 15 months my career took off. I went from entry level coordinator to the safety manager on the site in 9 months. In under 18 months from my start date, I was offered a position at the corporate office which led to a Senior Management position, leading the safety department for an entire Business Unit.

Incredible, right? I took huge leaps and bounds! Went from being in an entry level position to Senior Management of a multi-billion dollar organization in under 3 years! I must have been ecstatic right? I was… for a while, but then that faded away pretty quickly too.

Pretty soon I was working longer days than I was before. The phone never stopped ringing and the emails never stopped piling up. I felt I was fighting a battle that was impossible to win. I began waking up at 4:00am just so that I would have some time to myself, so that I could get into my own morning routine. That didn’t last long because as soon as people found out that I was up that early, the phone began to ring at 5:00am instead of 7:00am.

Even though from the outside, I had an influential position, in a big organization, and was making more money than I ever had in my life, I was miserable. I didn’t like what my life had become and I needed to make a change.

In January of this year, I took a step towards that change and I let my employer know that April 17 would be my last day of work. I was scared to death of what was going to happen but I was more scared of what would happen to me if I continued on the path I was on.

The world was wide open to me once again. Now, to finally answer that same question that I was faced with so many years ago:

What do I do next?

“All I know, is that I don’t want to do this forever.” – I couldn’t tell you how many times I heard this exact phrase while having conversations with coworkers over the years.

In my experience, there are very few people, who would say that their current profession or job is exactly what they want to do. Instead, they have made a decision somewhere along the way, to take a position or job based on a number of different factors.

It was their turn to take over the family business or they are following in their parents footsteps.

Because they were a great performer in a different role, they were promoted into a new position.

They applied and were hired for a role based only on the compensation rather than what they’re truly interested in or passionate about.

The third point was where I ended up getting trapped. I found myself in a position that paid incredibly well but I felt very little, if any passion for what I was doing. I was also one of those people who would finish the conversation by saying, “all I know, is that I don’t want to do this forever.”

So what did I want to do? That really is the question isn’t it and I had no idea how to answer it, or even how to figure out how to answer it. What I did know, is I didn’t want to continue doing what I was doing! I was tired of:

Working 12, 14, 16 or more hours a day.

Working in the freezing cold (I once worked in -55 degree weather).

Having to consistently put my family, friends and even myself behind the demands of my job.

In a few circumstances, even compromising my personal values in order to meet the expectations of my superiors for “the greater good of the company.”

All I know, is that I’m tired of saying “I don’t want to do this forever.” It’s time to change it to, “I’m excited and looking forward to doing this for as long as I’m fortunate enough to be able to.”

It was the first day back at work after 7 consecutive days off. At the time, I was working 6 hours North of my home town.

The day began with everyone sharing what they did on their week off. There were 4 of us that worked together all the time. One of the guys, who always had some interesting adventures to share went first:

“I had a great week,” he began.

“Oh yeah,” I responded. “What did you get up to?”

“Well,” he continued. “I went out and bought my son a new sled!”

“Oh yeah? How old is your son?”

“3,” he said with a certain prideful tone to his voice.

“I’m confused! I thought I heard you just say that you bought your 3 year old son a new sled… Is that right?”

“Yeah, that’s right! Why? What’s the big deal?” He was starting to look confused now.

“What else have you bought your 3 year old son?”

He went on to list off a lengthy list of toys and extravagances.

“Hold on a second! You must have spent thousands of dollars on all of that, and all of it is only for your son? Why? Why do you leave your family for weeks at a time to come to work, and then go home and spend thousands of dollars on things you don’t really need?”

His response is something that I will never forget.

“Well, I buy them all of these things so that they love me!”

I think it was in that moment, that the seed was planted in my mind, to do what it took to never find myself in that same situation as my co-worker sacrificing long days, and weeks away from my loved ones, in order to provide them the life the want, so that they love me.

Have you ever been bashed in the face by a baseball bat? No, I’m not kidding! Seriously, have you ever been bashed in the face by a baseball bat? Me neither, but I know someone who has.

Let me share a little story with you…

A brother and sister, let’s name them Scott and Cathy (completely imaginary names) were trying to decide what to do on a warm summer night.

Cathy asked Scott, “Do you want to go hide-and-seek in the back yard?”

Scott was about 10 years old and was “too cool” for playing hide-and-seek now, “No!! Let’s walk down to the school and hit the baseball around instead.”

Cathy, just wanting to hangout with her older brother agreed and ran to put on her shoes.

“I’ll grab my bat and ball and meet you in the front yard,” instructed Scott.

Scott ran downstairs, grabbed his his Louisville Slugger that he was given for his birthday in May and a tennis ball (because he could hit it further than a baseball), ran back upstair and darted outside to meet Cathy.

As the two made the 4 block trek towards the schoolyard, Scott began throwing the ball up in the air and swinging the bat, attempting to knock the ball closer to their destination but only connecting on every third swing or so.

Toss…. swing…. miss!

Toss… swing… miss!

Toss… swing… crack!

The ball would you flying down the street landing in the gutter or the front yard of a house on the block.

Continuing on their journey to the schoolyard, Cathy asked Scott, “Can I hit the ball this time?”

“No Cath, you don’t have enough control with the bat yet. You might hit a car or something. You can take some swings when we get to the schoolyard,” Scott responded just as the two walked up to the ball waiting for them in the gutter.

Scott picked up the ball, started walking forward again and continued with his routine…

Toss… swing… miss!

Toss… swing… miss!

Toss… swing… CRACK!!

Wait a sec… “that crack felt way different” – the thought barely had enough time to sprint through Scott’s mind when all he heard was a horrific, painful scream!

Scott spun around and confirmed with his eyes, what his heart and mind had already speculated, Cathy had gotten too close, and when Scott followed through with the swing of the bat, it had struck her straight in the mouth.

Cathy was screaming in agony and bleeding from the mouth and nose. Scott immediately ripped off his shirt (his favorite shirt I might add) and immediately placed it on Cathy’s face.

The two had only wandered 2 and half blocks from home but the journey back seemed like an eternity.

Scott put his arm around his younger sister who he had just bashed in the face with a baseball bat and reassured her repeatedly that everything was going to be ok – well, he reassured her after he made the mistake of causing Cathy to freak out when he initially looked at her and said, “Uh oh! I think you might be missing a tooth!”

Ok, you may have guessed already, but this is a true story that happened to me and my younger sister Cathy when we were about 10 and 7 years old. It’s one of those stories of my childhood that I will never forget.

Over the last 2 weeks, this story has crept into my mind a few times and I’ve been wondering, “why is this story creeping into my thoughts now?”

I believe that different experiences in our lives, have the power to teach us life lessons or morals of the story, multiple times throughout our life.

When this first happened, Cathy learned that if she didn’t want to get hit in the face with a baseball bat, don’t get too close to the batter. To be honest with you, when I was 10, the lesson I learned was, Cathy shouldn’t get too close to the batter.

Over the last couple weeks, I’ve really been feeling like I’ve been bashed in the face by a baseball bat. Only in this situation, it figurative rather than literal.

I’m not going to get into the details of what’s going on here in this post, that I will save for a future post. Instead, here is the latest life lesson, or moral to the story that I’ve taken from that day that originally occurred over 25 years ago, only this time, I’m in Cathy’s shoes, getting bashed in the face by the baseball bat:

Sometimes, knowingly or unknowingly, you put yourself into the swing radius and end up getting hit.

Share your stories about getting bashed in the face with a baseball bat so that anyone who finds themselves in a swing radius, they might recognize the danger before they get bashed in the face by a baseball bat.

There are very few people who seek out to, or want to bash you in the face with a baseball bat. Usually, it happens unknowingly or without intent to hurt you. Take the time to understand why it happened before anger and resentment sets in.

If or when you get bashed in the face by a baseball bat, the journey home can seem like a long one, especially if you’re in pain but, if you’re surrounded by people who care about you, who wrap their arms around you, who are willing to rip the shirt off their backs to comfort you, the journey will be worth remembering for years to come.

Have you learned any life lessons or have any morals to a story where you have been bashed in the face by a baseball bat, literally or figuratively?

Before I go, I’m just going to apologize to my sister Cathy again! Sorry Cath! Even though there was some conflicting speculation at the time, I didn’t mean to! Love ya!

Today, the reason for my feeling of weakness is fueled by a sense of regret. My Mom and I were not close for a significant period during my adult life. I intentionally missed a number of her Birthdays because I allowed our differences to drive a wedge between us.

I woke up to this quote today:

3 things you can’t recover in life:

The word after it’s said,

the moment after it’s missed,

and the time after it’s gone.

I know that I can’t change the past, but I can focus on what I’m doing right now so that I don’t replay the same mistake I made with my Mom. I will spend time with the people who care about me and those who I care about most. I will not allow those petty differences get in the way of what matters most. I will avoid wanting to recover a word that I have said, I’ll make the most of every moment and I’ll make the most of all the time I have.

I am learning so many lessons from my Mom, even after she has left us.

Happy Birthday Mom! I’ll even have a piece of cake for you.

For the last while, I’ve been struggling with something. I am having a difficult time seeing exactly what everyone else sees when they look at me. I’m not talking about physical appearance – I know I have blonde hair, blue eyes and I’m barely tall enough to qualify for the rides at Disneyland. What I’m talking about is the way that others perceive how I choose to live my life.

You don’t go to a #spartanrace and try to stay clean… You get #DownAndDirty! via realscottweller

I have had a number of people come up to me over the last 6-12 months and most share a very similar message with me and it sounds like this:

“It’s incredible what you’re doing.”

“You motivate me! You inspire me!”

“Keep doing what you’re doing. You’re accomplishing great things!”

The struggle that I’ve been facing is this – I don’t see what others see! I don’t understand what they see in me. I don’t think what I’m doing is special at all. I just see it as me doing what I can to help wherever I can.

I’ve had numerous conversations with those who I’m closest with, to try and understand it better. Every single conversation has gone something like:

“I understand that I am doing things that are helping others. I understand that I’ve taken some leaps of faith that have paid off. But I just see it as doing what I can to help others. What I worry about, is that everyone who is watching what I’m doing, and commenting to me that it’s inspiring and motivating them, my fear is that they are painting a picture of who Scott Weller is and it’s not an accurate picture. I’m no one special. I don’t understand it!”

At this point, I usually get that “Oh come on!!” look from whoever I’m talking to. The most common response is usually something similar to:

“Scott, what if you really are inspiring and motivating people to make a better life for themselves? Isn’t that what you want?”

To which I always reply, “Of course!”

“Then why are you even questioning yourself? Why aren’t you just embracing it?”

What a great question to ask myself. Why am I not just embracing everything that is happening?

This is what I came up with:

I’m scared to come across as egotistical or cocky – Even as I attempted to write this post, it took me over 10 attempts to actually write it, all because I kept questioning my motivations behind writing it. Will people think I’m looking for attention? Will people think I’m being an egotistical bastard?

I’m scared to fail – OMG! What happens if I fail? I’d be letting down my family! I’d be letting down my friends! Someone will be able to tell me, “I told you so!”

I’m scared to be a success – Ever since I hit Rock Bottom and started to turn my life around, I’ve always wanted to help others. I’ve always wanted to be an inspiration to those who are going through their own struggles. I’ve always wanted to… I’ve always wanted to do what I’m having such a difficult time understanding right now.

#quote #Rumi #motivation #inspiration #ListenToTheCall via realscottweller

I recently met someone who really put this into perspective for me…

“Stand on one foot,” She demanded, so I lifted my left leg. “How does that feel?”

“Not bad.” I responded.

“How long do you think you could stand there like that?”

“I don’t know. 15 minutes or so…” as I wobbled a bit from side to side.

“Ok, now stand with both feet firm on the ground. How long do you think you could stand like that?

“As long as I need to.”

“Exactly! This is exactly what you’re doing in life. You’re putting one foot in, instead of jumping in with both feet and just embracing everything that’s happening right now.”

WOW! She’s right!

It’s time to take a dose of my own medicine and, as I like to say, put my “Big Boy Pants” on! I’m going to let go of the fears and just embrace the opportunities that are being provided to me.

I want to hear from you – Do you struggle with similar challenges? Do you find yourself minimizing your contributions and trying to rationalize why you should stay small instead of stepping into your vast potential?
