Have you ever woken up in the middle of the night and your first reaction is “WTF! Where am I?” You stumble around in your thoughts, trying to regain your bearings and then you either realize that you’re laying in bed and you have just had a crazy dream, or, you find 2 officers in your front hallway with their tasers drawn! I’ll save that completely unrelated story for another day.
On this occasion, I awoke to another sight which was just as shocking! A bright pink concrete wall!
I will never forget that shade of pink. The moment I looked at it, I thought of Pepto Bismol! The color that allegedly brings immediate relief of “nausea, heartburn, indigestion, upset stomach and diarrhea!” – If you don’t remember these classic commercials, let me do you a favour:
Unfortunately for me, this Pepto Bismol pink-colored wall did absolutely nothing for the massive, pounding headache I had!
“WTF happened?” I thought to myself.
Some of my memory from that day is spotty at best, but I very vividly remember the next thought that crossed my mind, “What the hell have I done?”
The inner-dialogue continued as I slowly raised myself from the cold floor and the pool of drool that had been collected over the last hour and half. “OMG, what is She going to do to me? Seriously Scott? Do you think She’s going to stay with you through this? No way! She’s going to leave me…”
I don’t know how long I sat there in the drunk tank before they came and opened the door. It was one of the loneliest moments of my life.
Eventually the door swung open, “Your girlfriend is here to pick you up,” said the officer.
“Does she look pissed?” I asked. I had no idea what to anticipate.
She didn’t say much. I could see that she had been crying. It was a long, silent ride home. I had no idea what to say.
We walked in the front door and as I racked my mind to try and think of what to say, She broke the silence, “Do you even remember what happened?”
“No, not really. I remember little pieces here and there. I remember going to the barbecue and having a beer or two. The next thing I remember is being in the back of the police car with the handcuffs digging into my wrists. What happened?”
“You really don’t remember do you?”
“I don’t remember anything else,” I responded.
“You called me. You told me that you were in an accident. You said that there was another guy who was driving your truck and he had left you at the scene of the accident.”
Even without remembering anything, I knew that this was complete bullshit.
“I drove to meet you. It was only 3 blocks away from home. Both drivers side tires were flat and it looked like the truck had been driven at least a full block on the rims before it came to a stop.”
For the next hour, She told me how the Police received a call from a concerned motorist that had noticed a truck driving erratically and dangerously. The motorist followed the truck over 80 city blocks! 80 BLOCKS!! Approaching the University area (a very high population of vehicles and pedestrians) the truck took an abrupt left hand turn, blew out both the front and rear driver side tires and drove on the rims for another block before coming to a complete stop. The witness then parked and watched, a mid-20’s 5 foot 6 inch male with blonde hair, stumble out of the drivers seat and make a call on their cell phone. Well that description sounds familiar!
That night, I pretended to sleep. I couldn’t sleep! The events of the last 24 hours, as embarrassing and stressful as they were, were not the cause of my lack of sleep. It was the subtle movement from the other side of the mattress that could not be mistaken. I pretended to be asleep because I knew I was the reason why She sobbed herself to sleep that night, and I didn’t have a clue what to do to make it better.
