Thank you so much for sharing Jen! I know exactly what you mean when you say it's harder to connect with yourself than a stranger. In fact, I would say that in a lot of cases, the reason we struggle to connect with others intimately is directly related to our inability to connect with ourselves!

Keep on battling! It makes you stronger each and every moment of each and every day!

Last week in a yoga workshop I'm taking, my instructor had us try a mirror meditation - essentially, you sit yourself in front of a mirror and stare at one spot in your eye for around five minutes. After that, we did the same thing with a partner, staring them in the eye for five minutes.

I can honestly say that, despite the awkwardness of having to connect so intimately with a stranger, the five minutes staring at myself was harder.

I've always found it hard to look at myself in the mirror. I think, like you, I developed my own drinking problem to overcome that insecurity in public and to cope with it in private. I'm now almost two years sober, and I'm still working on building from the inside out. It's a daily battle, but I feel more happy now, fat and sober, than I did when I was skinny and drunk all the time.
